Why panel depth matters?

Miles Donovan, senior EMEA channel development manager, Christie, looks at the importance of panel depth when choosing an LCD flat panel.

Pro AV integrators and designers have to look at many things when specifying LCD flat panels. Screen size, bezel width, image resolution, brightness and energy consumption are just a few features that are considered when designing a video wall, interactive display or the installation of a standalone screen.

Now, as end users and organizations are looking to create visually-rich environments in more challenging spaces, factors that may have not been largely considered are becoming increasingly important. One example of this is panel depth. Previously, the panel depth – the measurement of a flat panel from front-to-back – was not a major concern to most designers.

However, as we see the integration of more and more LCD flat panels in a variety of settings, panel depth must be looked at when choosing a display. Whether it’s to satisfy regulatory compliance, or fit into a challenging installation space, improve aesthetics, or maximize a retail space’s square footage, the thinner an LCD panel is, the more design flexibility it offers.

Christie offers a range of ultra-thin, large-format LCD flat panels that feature panel depths measuring less than 3″ (76 mm). Light weight and versatile, these flat panels can be integrated much more easily into challenging environments where space is at a premium or in situations where accessibility compliance is required.

Barrier-free accessibility
Designing accessible, barrier-free environments for people with disabilities is a very important aspect of the integration process. In the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets standards for the construction of accessible public facilities. Under the act’s section for Protruding Objects, ADA compliance requires that “objects projecting from walls… shall protrude no more than 4″ (100 mm) into walks, halls, corridors, passageways, or aisles.”

Similar legislation and guidelines exist in Canada and Europe as well. The installation of flat panels falls under these regulations, and as such, the thinner the panel depth, the easier it is to design and build barrier-free environments.

With a panel depth of less than 3″ (76 mm), Christie large-format LCD flat panels make it easier to design and create accessibility compliant, barrier-free spaces since there is no need for expensive and time-consuming renovations to the space.

Design flexibility
When creating a space that will use LCD flat panels, designers don’t want the technology to be the focal point of the display. Ideally, designers are looking to create an environment where the viewer is given an engaging experience without noticing the installed technology. The thinner and more lightweight an LCD flat panel is, the easier it is to integrate seamlessly where the content is prominently featured over the technology.

The thin profile of Christie LCD flat panels allows them to be installed seamlessly into spaces where they can blend into the environment. Light weight panels featuring an ultra-narrow bezel can be tiled into near-seamless video walls easily by reducing the need for costly, major structural support reinforcement.

Ease of installation
Designers and integrators alike both require an LCD flat panel solution that will easily and seamlessly integrate into the installation space with few or no structural modifications. Christie LCD flat panels are ideal for installation where either space is at a premium or the budget does not cover costly renovations. The light weight makes them easy to manoeuvre and install while also reducing shipping costs.
Maximizing available space

In environments where space is at a premium, such as lobbies, hallways and particularly retail stores, maximizing the available square footage is of major importance. Bulkier, heavier flat panels may require more substantial mounts or custom mounting structures that may not fit within the environment.

With Christie LCD flat panels, retailers and other organizations can easily leverage the proven benefits of digital displays without costly renovations or sacrificing valuable floor space.
Christie LCD flat panels allow for maximum messaging exposure while having a minimal impact on square footage. Organizations can better engage their audience with the dynamic digital content offered by these displays without forfeiting floor or wall space.
